B.M.X. = Bicycle Motocross. BMX is bicycle racing around a dirt track head-to-head against other riders. You race against other riders of the same age and skill level. A race starts at the Starting Gate where all riders leave at the same time and race as fast as they can around the track over dirt jumps, around banked corners and to the finish line. The winner is the racer who gets to the finish line first. Typically, you race 3 motos or heats per event and more if you qualify for the main event final races. BMX is fun, exciting and the skills you learn in BMX can be used in many other cycling sports. History of BMX BMX began in California in the early 1970's and grew so fast that several organizations in the U.S. began to sanction organized events across the country by 1974. Modeled after its nearest cousin, Motocross, BMX racing was an alternative to motorized dirt track racing. Anyone with a 20" bicycle could get into the action. They were jumping their bikes and getting air just like the motocross riders.
BMX entered Canada in the late 70's, and peaked in popularity around 1985. BMX is once again rising in popularity and is one of the fastest growing family sports in Canada!
